How To Use Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pens

The Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pens is a fun way to draw instead of cutting the Silhouette Cameo or Portrait machine. They come in many different colors (even metallics and glitter!) and are incredibly easy to use. If you have ever pulled out the cutting blade to adjust the blade depth and then reinstalled it in the cutting machine, you can use a sketch pen.

If you are new to your Silhouette Cameo machine, this “How to Use a Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pens” series is ideal! Today we are covering how to use the Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pen, so pull up a chair and learn more about this amazing crafting machine.

Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pens are perfect for achieving a hand-drawn look. They are great for creating invitations, cards, place cards, or even some sketches to hang as wall art. Also, once the Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pen is sketching, you can put the regular cutting blade back in to cut your design into fun sizes and shapes. Let’s start from the beginning.

Picking a Pen or Marker For Sketching

There are many options for picking the pen you want to use for the sketch project. You can use anything from the Silhouette Cameo sketch pens to Sharpies to chalk! Let’s start by talking about Silhouette’s brand of pens designed for sketching.

What is a Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pen?

They are pens designed and sold by Silhouette for sketching and drawing in their machines.

Silhouette Cameo sketch pens are small, stubby bullet pens that fit snugly into Silhouette machines. They are rollerball-style pens that come in 24 different colors, including primary brights, neons, glitters, and metallic inks.

There are two models of the Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pen – the new model with a black body and the old model with a white body.

The new black Sketch pens fit better into adapters for the latest Cameo 4 and Portrait 3 machines. Still, they work with all models of Silhouette cutting machines, including the older Cameos, Portraits, and Curios.

Learn How You Can Use Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pens

The method for using the Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pen will differ slightly depending on the Silhouette Cameo machine you are using. For Silhouette Cameo 3, Portrait 2, and Curio, you can insert a Silhouette Cameo sketch pen directly into the tool holder.

Since the Silhouette Cameo 4 and Portrait 3 have automatic tool detection, you’ll need to use one of the tool adapters that came with the machine to keep the Silhouette Cameo sketch pen in place. The blue adapter is created to be used with the new black sketch pen or the old style of a pen holder.

You simply clip the adapter around the Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pen and then lock it into the Portrait 3 machine slot or the first tool carriage of your Silhouette Cameo 4. The small metal bar on the back of the adapter tells your machine that you have held a sketch pen into the machine and helps lock it nicely.

Using Another Pen With a Pen Holder

Luckily, sketching projects aren’t limited to the Silhouette Cameo sketch pens. Thanks to pen holders, you can use many different pens and markers with the Silhouette Cameo machine.

What Type of Pens Can You Use With the Silhouette Cameo?

Really, the answer is any pen that can fit in a pen holder. We recommend trying fun ink pens that will give you a look you cannot get with a printer.

How to Load a Sketch Pen into Silhouette Cameo Machine

First, you have to lift the machine’s lid and remove the cutting blade by turning the small blue knob to the left side and lifting the blade out of the housing. Then select the color of the Silhouette Cameo sketch pen you want to use, remove the pen’s lid, and place it, face down, into the housing.

Be sure you push your pen down into the holder so that the thickest part of the pen hits the top side of the holder, and the pen can’t slide any further. If you do not get the pen completely in, it won’t reach the paper, and the Silhouette Cameo will draw up instead of paper.

Once the pen is loaded, put the paper on the cutting mat, press firmly on all sides, and load the cutting mat into your machine.

Go back to the computer and press Send to Silhouette at the bottom of the Cut Settings window, or press the Send to Silhouette icon in the bar section at the top, then press Start, and the machine should begin creating your design.

Once the machine is drawn, don’t unload paper just yet. If you want to continue drawing using a different color, or if you want to cut out the design after you’ve finished drawing, leave the cutting mat right there and proceed to the next steps.

You’re done if all you wanted was to create a single picture in a single color without any cuts. You can ask the machine to take off and draw your design from the cutting mat.

How You Can Use Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pens With Multiple Colors

If you want the design to have multiple colors, don’t remove the cutting mat after the first color is finished. Leave it where it is and go back to the computer to install the second piece of the design.

In the Cut Settings window, choose the design piece you drew and adjust the Cut Style to “No Cut”; you do not want to drag that piece a second time. Then choose the next piece of the design you want to draw, and adjust the cut style to “Cut.” When doing this, be careful not to change your design on the screen, or your lines will be a little off.

Be sure everything else is still set to “No Cut.” Then remove your first sketch pen from your holder and insert your new sketch pen, following the instructions above.

  1. Press on Send to Silhouette again to tell your machine to begin drawing another piece of your design.
  2. Repeat these steps for each new pen color until you complete your design.
  3. Once your machine has finished drawing with the Silhouette Cameo Sketch Pen, don’t unload the paper just yet. If you want to cut the design, leave the cutting mat right where it is and move on to the next step.

You’re done if you only wanted a single drawing in multiple colors without any cuts. You can ask the machine to take off and draw your design from the cutting mat.
